Two PBQ members had quilts chosen for the Quilts of the Coastal South exhibit. The exhibit will run from February - April 2010 at the NQM in Paducah, Kentucky and features work by quilters from LA, MS, AL, GA, and the Florida Panhandle.

Judy Spiers' "Mississippi Backroad Treasures" (94" x 94") and J. Marcus Weekley's "Desert Cactus" (70" x 70") are pictured below.

Marcus gave us some background on his entry, with acknowledgement of inspiration from Judy's work.

"Mom and I had taken a trip to New Mexico when I was going to school at Texas Tech. The landscape there is a different kind of beautiful: harsh, with washed-out colors, and I wanted a quilt to commemorate that experience. Also, our guild, Pine Belt Quilters, chose the Log Cabin as its theme block, and I wanted to make a quilt which combined all the variations of the Log Cabin: an altered version of the original Log Cabin, the Pineapple, and the Courthouse Steps. I was also inspired by the intricacy of Judy Spiers' miniatures, but wanted to make something similar on a larger scale (mine only has 3,100 pieces). As for the colors: I HATE the color pink, but wanted to challenge myself artistically, so, I chose pink and green for my colors to work with."

"Desert Cactus" was paper-pieced, and is made from cottons, silks, and batiks. It took one and a half months to complete (it was constructed in September/October, 2009) and was the first bed-sized quilt Marcus paper-pieced and quilted using a long-arm machine.

The Quilter Magazine featured an article by Lucy A. Fazely on the works of Martha Ginn in their 25th Anniversary issue, March 2010.
